Career Academies

CAREER ACADEMIES - is a unique opportunity for young people coming into Fifth Year, to gain: practical experience through completing an internship (not work experience) practical experience working with key industry people discussing employment, jobs, etc.- network with other young people within the programme to widen your contacts  http://www.careeracademies.org.uk/

To apply for a position in this unique programme, you need to meet the following criteria.

 *   Be 16 years old by the start of this programme or by Summer 2014
 *   Be completing 2 or 3 Highers
 *   Have good grades in Standard Grade English and Maths
 *   Be planning on staying on in school until the end of Sixth Year
 *   Be available/able to take part in the paid internship during Summer 2014 (4 weeks of school hols)
 *   Have the right to work in the UK
 *   Have parental agreement about participation
 *   Be able to attend Friday afternoon 'Guru' Lectures and Visits (not all Fridays)

Active Schools Sports Membership Update

A warm welcome back to what promises to be a very active year at James Gillespie's High School. With our Physical Education facilities at the Lauderdale Campus no longer available we will be utilising a number of local venues, in addition to Meadowbank Sports Centre, to ensure our diverse extra curricular programme can continue to thrive throughout our decant years.

To assist with the transition to this new programme a number of important headlines are listed below;

·         Activities will start the WB 9th September (This may differ by one week from previous communication)
·         Term 1 Activities will run until the WE 13th December
·         For all activities taking place at Meadowbank Sports Centre, pupils will be bussed to and from the venue. (Buses will leave the Lauderdale campus at 4pm, returning at approximately 6pm)
·         For all activities not taking place at Meadowbank we are requesting pupils walk the short distance to these facilities. (Safe routes and directions are provided on the school website)
·         Payment is set at; £25 for 1 activity; £35 for 2 activities and £45 for 3+ activities. This membership lasts the full academic year.
·         To participate pupil must have paid the correct amount as well as returned the required EE2 form, activity choice form and a permitted dismissal from Meadowbank form (if required)

SCO Work Experience Opportunity

Each season the SCO offers two work experience placement opportunities for secondary school pupils over 16 years old.

What's involved?
You will have the opportunity to spend time with all the departments of the SCO administration and attend rehearsals and concerts where possible.

The SCO offers two placements that each last one week. If you are successful, you will be based at the Scottish Chamber Orchestra offices in Edinburgh

Week 1   Week beginning 14 October 2013
Week 2 Week beginning 25 November 2013

In Service Day - Date changed

The Council of the European Union has decided that the date of the next European Parliament Election will be brought forward from Thursday 5 June 2014 to Thursday 22 May 2014.
 
Accordingly, the fifth In-Service Day designated for 5 June 2014 will now be held on 22 May 2014.
 
This change will affect all schools in Edinburgh

CHRISTMAS CONCERT FULL DAY REHEARSAL – WED. 28TH AUGUST 2013

Our school Christmas Concert returns to the Usher Hall on 17th December 2013.

In order to assist with rehearsals for this during the split site campus, there will be full day rehearsals scheduled over the coming months where senior pupils involved in the following groups will be out of class during the day to attend:

Wind Band (including some S3 pupils)
Senior String Orchestra
Senior Guitar Ensemble
Clarsach Ensemble (a mixture of year groups)
Senior Choir (S4 to S6 pupils)

The first full day of rehearsals takes place on Wednesday 28th August between Darroch Drama Studio and Bruntsfield House (music dept.)

Pupils SHOULD NOT register with their class teacher but should make their way to the appropriate rehearsal at the start of the period:

Periods 1 and 2:            Wind Band at Darroch
                                     Percussion Section in B17

Periods 3 and 4:            String Orchestra at Darroch
                                     Guitar Ensemble in S16
                                     Clarsach Ensemble in B13

Periods 5 and 6:            Senior Choir in B1 and B3 (all S4 to S6 pupils are welcome to join: no audition and no previous experience necessary)
