S5 Induction Days for session 2014/15

S5 Induction Days for session 2014/15

Dear Senior Student,

Further to your letter from Mr McCallum regarding exam leave you will be aware that you are due to return to school on Monday 2nd June for the start of your 5th year. We hope you have been successful in your examinations and we look forward to welcoming you in to senior school next week.

Due to the fact that S5 is so different from previous years, with increased demands but also increased responsibilities, we have constructed an induction programme over two days to help ease this transition and ensure that you are best prepared for all that the year will bring.

The programme includes presentations from school staff, partner agencies and an inspirational speaker from the community. You will receive information that you require for the year including your timetable and a senior school contract. You will also have the opportunity to hear about how you can succeed in both your school work and in your wider achievements.

The programme for the two days will be issued to you when you arrive at school on Monday 2nd June. Please note that although the programme is Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd June you should not arrive in school until 11.00am on Monday 2nd outside the main reception at Lauderdale Street Campus. The programme will commence in the Dining Centre with Mr Macdonald and our inspirational speaker, who we are delighted to welcome to the school.

On Tuesday you will be required to come in clothing and footwear suitable for games and team building. You will also require a packed lunch or food for sharing with your friends.

Please note that if for any reason you are unable to attend the two days induction programme you must ask your parent/carer to contact the school since only young people who have attended this programme will be ready to start courses on Wednesday 5th June unless alternative arrangements have been agreed.

We very much look forward to seeing you on Monday.
Yours faithfully,

Ms Hazel Kinnear

Edinburgh Food Bank

Edinburgh Food Bank Collection

4th year pupils are running a campaign to generate food donations for a local Edinburgh food bank. This food bank helps people who cannot afford to support themselves or their family. This food bank is a charitable organisation and is run solely by volunteers. This campaign is asking all pupils and teachers to help donate non-perishable food items to the food bank, these will be collected from the 15th to 23rd of May in Registration.
Please encourage pupils to bring in at least one item - particularly canned food such as soup, tinned meat, dried pasta or rice, cereal, tinned fruit, tea and coffee, pasta/curry sauces, crisps and biscuits.
Fresh food cannot be accepted due to health and safety for example fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and meat and fresh juice and milk.  UHT milk and long life non chilled juice is fine. Formula milk is also needed.
Items such as nappies, deodorants, shower gel, shampoo and soap are in high demand along with food so donations of these items are also well received.
Crates to collect donations will be in registration classes between the 15th and 23rd May to collect all items.

A LIST OF ACCEPTED FOOD PRODUCTS ARE:
Pasta, rice, biscuits, crisps, tinned fish, tinned meat, tinned fruit, cereal, chocolate, fruit juice, sugar, pasta, curry sauces, tea bags, jelly, coffee, noodles, bottled juice, UHT milk and nappies.

Thank you for your efforts.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

As part of our school’s ‘Health Week’, the Health and Wellbeing working party are organising our first 3K ‘Fun Run’. This is a fundraising event for the JGHS Trust which provides support and funding for educational and extra-curricular activities within the school.

The event supports athletes of all ages and abilities and invites pupils, staff and parents to participate. The race will take place at 2.30pm on Thursday 29th May at the Meadows (start position at the whalebone arch). There will be prizes for the winners of each age category, a prize for the best ‘fancy dress’ and a special prize for the pupil who raises the most amount of money.

If you or your child would like to participate please complete the sponsorship form and EE2 on the back of this sheet and hand it into Mr Newall in the PE Department before Tuesday 20th May. It is important to note that due to staffing we can only have a maximum of 150 people participating in the event so please hurray with your sponsor form as participation will be on a first come basis.

Pupil school email accounts

Pupil email accounts have recently been updated to Office365 and are no longer part of their GLOW account.

Pupil email addresses remain the same and are of the form 987654321@schools.edin.org using their SCN number which is the same number they use to log on to school computers.

To access their email they should now go to the website http://office365.edin.org/

In school this will automatically connect to their email account.  From non-school computers, they will then need to log on using their SCN number and usual school log-on password.

Any email sent prior to the changeover will still be available in their GLOW email account.  Any email sent since the changeover will now be sent to the new Office365 account.

Any pupil experiencing any problems with their email should speak to Mrs Barrass or Mr McCallum.
