The Dloko choir needs you!

Hopefully many of you will have heard that the wonderfully talented choir of Dloko High School are coming to Edinburgh in August to perform at the Fringe festival. James Gillespie's and Dloko High Schools enjoy a close relationship as a result of the JGHS South Africa project, and their visit to Edinburgh this year has been made possible by the work of Andrew Paterson of the John Byrne award, and former JGHS head teacher and founder of the Jabulani project, Alex Wallace.

We are currently looking for families from the JGHS community to host pupils from the choir during their stay in Edinburgh. This is a wonderful chance for Gillespie's pupils to get involved in the project and get to know the learners from Dloko and we would like to extend this opportunity to all pupils across the school, whether or not they intend to visit South Africa. If you think that you can offer accommodation to one or more pupils for any number of nights during the period of 3rd-17th August please contact Lisa Gray who is coordinating the hostings (lisa.gray@jamesgillespies.edin.sch.uk).

In addition, please make sure that you take up the opportunity to come and see one of the choir's amazing performances and bring your friends and family too! Their visit culminates in three concerts at the Assembly Rooms on Augsut 12th, 13th and 14th and the JGHS chamber choir will be joining or South African friends on stage for the finale item. Tickets for these shows are available at a discounted rate of £12 for JGHS pupils, parents, staff and alumni from the school office, and are also available to buy online on the Fringe website (search for 'Township Voices'). The venue has been kindly offered for free so all proceeds from the shows will be fed back into supporting Dloko High School and their local community.

Reports Update
Many thanks to everyone who offered feedback on the format of the reports and their scheduling. The main concerns reported to us were:
1. The period of time between reports when pupils progressed from one year to the next and
2.The format of the reports.

In response we have:
1. Amended the timing of the reports, especially as pupils progress from one year to another.
For S4,5 and 6 the timing of the reports has been adjusted to better fit in with prelims and SQA deadlines.
2. We will amend the format of the reports to make them easier for parents to understand.

For S1 to S4 inclusive, Parents will receive three reports. There will be a full report with detailed comment from each of your child’s teachers and a further two ‘Progress’ reports which will be very brief and will highlight any areas of concern.
For S5 and S6, parents will receive an additional progress report.

Throughout next session we will also be developing an on-line version of a Pupil Profile which will capture each pupil’s reflections on their own learning.
This on-line report will also include details of each pupil’s wider achievements.
